Fish and Creatures

Pond CometsWater gardens provide a tranquil setting to enjoy watching your fish swim in harmony. At Randy’s you’ll find a wide assortment of popular “gold fish” including Comets, Fantails and Calico Shibunkin. From time to time our inventory also includes American Flag Fish, Blue Horse Minnow, Channel Catfish, Alligator Gar and others. If you enjoy koi, you’ll have no problem choosing from our choice selection of domestic and imported varieties. Just make sure your pond is properly equipped to handle these majestic fish. Koi ponds should be at least 500 gallons with double the filtration you’d provide for a normal pond. This double filtration helps make up for the lack of plants found in a typical koi pond.

Feeding fishWith all the talk of mosquito borne diseases, you may consider adding fish which take an active roll in removing these pests from your pond. Consider purchasing Gambusia, the now famous "mosquito fish" which consumes mosquito larvae. Another great mosquito eater is Randy's Favorite fish, the Golden Orfe. Golden Orfes are extremely active top-feeders that provide great mosquito control. They are prized for their beautiful color and rapid growth. Every pond should have at least a few of these wonderful fish!

Algae is a common pond problem in the summer. To combat this problem you may consider purchasing an "Algae Eater" fish. This South American native literally functions as a pond "vacuum cleaner" as it rids all exposed surfaces of unwanted scum & debris. You'll be amazed how much algae it can consume! Algae eaters are tropical so they must come inside for the winter! You may consider purchasing a small aquarium to over-winter them.

And Fish aren't the only thing you can put in your pond. We also have tadpoles, turtles, snails, water dogs (baby Salamander), crawfish, crabs & more!
