Spring 2005

Spring is the favored season for plant lovers. At no other time during the year does the lush new foliage of emergent plant life shine so green. The poets often associate spring with rebirth and it’s easy to see why. While we humans slowly stumble from our winter’s slumber the new season is busy providing us with delightful sights and sounds that make each of us feel like we’ve been born anew. At Randy’s we’ve undergone our own rebirth in the past year. We’ve added a new addition to our office allowing our customers extra space to browse our quality selection of pond hard goods. We’ve also expanded our selection of choice fountains and statuary. We’re currently at work expanding our fish and aquatic plant displays and will soon feature a drastically increased selection of both hardy and tropical water lilies.

Many folks wonder what advantages tropical water lilies might hold. After all, if there are “hardy” lilies, why bother purchasing the tropical ones? The simple reason is the blooms. Tropical lilies feature colors that are bold and distinctive. Neon blue and electric pink are just a few of the exciting colors offered. Many of these lilies are “night blooming” meaning that their flowers actually open in the evening and close late the following morning. This allows their flowers to be viewed at times when people are typically at their homes. You could even hold a “water lily party” and invite your friends over during a warm spring evening! When the pond water becomes too cold for these lilies in the fall, simply remove them from the pond and place them in a garage or someplace where the temperature remains above 50°F. Be sure to ask our helpful staff about our quality selection of tropical water lilies.

One scent you’ll likely smell around our nursery early this spring is that of Daphne odora. This evergreen shrub delights visitors each year with its highly fragrant blooms which can color an entire yard with their perfume. At our nursery you’ll find both pink and white blooming varieties as well as ones with white margined leaves. In North Georgia Daphne prefers part sun and very well drained soil. Daphne reaches a mature height of 3’ X 3’. Hurry to get yours today as they won’t last long!

Windmill Palms have greatly increased in popularity recently. They are now seen around Atlanta in commercial developments, private residences and around ponds and pools. While some “big box” stores have recently cashed in on this trend remember that Randy’s has been supplying Atlanta with Windmill Palms for over 10 years. Our supply is outmatched by none and our friendly staff are always willing to share growing tips and advice. Remember to check with Randy’s before buying your Windmills anywhere else!
